The Burrowkind#
The Burrowkind are a kind of hare-people who inhabit a reality they call the Burrowlands.
Burrowkind, in general, live simple lives farming the highly fertile soils of the Burrowlands. Their society is structured around the burrow, a community of around 50 to 100 individuals led by a dozen or so elders and who live communally in complex networks of earthen dwellings. They are strongly mistrustful of outsiders, particularly seam-walkers, whose practice they abhor; while the Burrowkind are aware of the existence of other realities and the seams between them, it is very rare for a Burrowkind to leave the Burrowlands and rarer still for those who have left to return.
They are known for cultivating a range of unique food and medicinal crops, including what they call anchor root, a vegetable native to the Burrowlands with a characteristic deep black taproot which renders the consumer immune to the effects of drift, but also unable to open or pass through seams. Anchor root is part of the everyday diet of almost all Burrowkind, and thus they exhibit a remarkable resilience to drift, so much so that seam-walkers find it difficult to open a passage to the Burrowlands at all.
Ilyar is a Burrowkind who, never feeling quite at comfort among his kind, has left the Burrowlands to learn the walking art under Bentley’s questionable tutelage.
